Why is it a necessity to develop the emotional intelligence of our collaborators?

12/1/21

Most of the time, not just almost always, when you're in a business, the main and most important thing is to make it grow and reach your goals. As companies, we are concerned about attracting the best talent available, we invest time, money and effort in this process with the purpose and certainty that by forming teams with highly trained personnel, we will achieve our strategic objectives.

Once we have selected our ideal candidates, we ask the talent acquisition area to prepare a flawless Onboarding process in which we ensure that the new employee knows perfectly the mission, vision and values with which we, as a company, preach. We train them and constantly monitor their performance seeking to ensure that everything they told us about their experience is true and begins to materialize into benefits and profits for the business.

What is the importance of our employees' emotions?

What we normally don't do is worry about getting to know the person behind the role. Who is my employee really? What motivates them? What worries them? How have they reacted throughout their life to adversity? What makes them angry? What stresses them? What takes them out of their center? Perhaps you might suddenly ask yourself, how does knowing that benefit my business? Or maybe you are one of those who think that work life is a point and apart from personal life, but the reality is different.

Currently, emotional intelligence is not given the importance it deserves; most of our decisions are dominated by emotions. Impulses of emotions and feelings must be guided, oriented, controlled and expressed through healthy emotional intelligence.

Here are some data on healthy emotional intelligence in the workplace:

  • The current world has shown that successful people are not characterized by their rational intelligence or IQ. On the contrary, the most common traits among successful employees, leaders or managers are their personal skills.
  • In the 21st century, emotional intelligence is an indispensable ability for human beings to be aware of their own emotions and those of the other people they live with.
  • Emotional intelligence can be developed when the person is aware that they possess it and that they need to focus on their strengths and areas for improvement to establish improvement plans, with concrete actions to develop their emotions so that, based on this, they are apt to conduct themselves appropriately with themselves, with other people when relating to them and thus, together, contribute to the achievement of well-being goals, both personal and professional.

How do the thoughts and emotions of our employees work?

For many years, it has been recognized that human beings possess two minds: one that thinks and one that feels, or, in a way, “the mind of the brain” and “the mind of the heart.” These two minds interrelate and work as a team.

  • The first of these is the rational mind, the thinking mind, capable of weighing and reflecting.
  • While the other type of knowledge is impulsive, creative, and powerful, it is the emotional mind, and although we sometimes let ourselves be carried away by the most irrational impulses, these emotional impulses can be controlled to achieve success if we intelligently use these emotions.

Hence the importance and need for a company to train, educate, and develop emotional competencies.

Collaborators with high levels of emotional intelligence are able to understand, motivate, and help their colleagues, strengthen working relationships, understand needs, promote productivity, learn from mistakes, manage work stress, and resolve conflicts between colleagues, suppliers, and clients.
