What is SAP Notes and what is its implementation importance?

11/24/22

They are small corrections of some error that SAP delivers before the support packages (support package) are published

All SAP notes must be included in a next version of the support package to solve problems.

What does a SAP note contain?

SAP notes contain the correction instructions that can be implemented in the system via SNOTE before the support package is published.

In addition, there are FAQ notes that do not contain the correction instructions, but are informative notes that have a description of important data in the system.

In this way, SAP can edit the notes after their release: as soon as SAP processes the note, changes to the note will be released and its use will be improved.

Where are SAP notes available?

SAP notes is available on the SAP support portal; however, consultants usually download the list as a PDF file directly from the SAP Support Portal or the SAP SNOTE.

The SAP note contains all the details of the problems followed by how to solve them. In addition, this component has some header-level information that, although in some cases it may seem trivial, is the first information to be searched before delving into it.

How are SAP notes composed?

The data we find in the SAP notes are the following:

SAP note number

The SAP Notes number is the data that allows you to uniquely identify the note according to SAP OSS notes data and thereby have better control of the corrections.

SAP notes processing status

The status applies to the display of SNOTE suggestions. For a processable suggestion, this indicates whether the product has been fully implemented or not.

Implementation status

This is critical information for each note. The implementation status indicates whether the note contains code corrections that must be implemented in the SAP system or whether it only contains information or instructions to solve the problem in case such an error is observed.

A note can have the status “can be implemented” and that means it is an account that contains code corrections and resolves the problem of a specific function.

A status of “cannot be implemented” means that there are no code corrections that can resolve the problem.

In this last case, SAP advises avoiding or taking certain measures to guarantee that the identified error does not occur or simply explains the design of the support packages and the reason for the error. Therefore, there are no code-level changes and no action is necessary for the note.

Short text within the note

In this section, you can read the summary of the topic addressed in the note, as well as indications in the system and changes in the version.

SAP component that is specified to which it applies

It is useful to make an exclusion of the use of suggestions for certain problems; for example, if the note is intended for a specific area and the observed problem is not in that area, this information allows excluding any help from the note.

Long text within the note

This section provides a detailed description of the symptoms, often accompanied by an example scenario, followed by the details of the system error. This makes it easier to resolve any problem.

Error conditions

In this part, it shows why and under what conditions the error occurs. When a user receives a problem and analyzes whether the note works or not, it helps to see if the conditions that cause the error are part of the problem, which makes it a valid scenario for the note.

Solution

The solution is presented and then described in detail. For a completely applicable note, a list of codes that must be updated will be seen, followed by the code that must be added in support packages, deleted or changed.

Valid actions

SAP clearly emphasizes the version of the component to which the correction applies. The reason for this is that SAP will solve known problems in future versions and, therefore, the described problem will only appear in certain versions or in older versions.

Often, consultants end up discovering clues that are somehow irrelevant because the clues are for older versions. Therefore, it should be considered carefully before working on the details of the qualification.

Implementation of suggestions

In short, SAP notes are SAP correction instructions for known problems in the system.

Corrections can be mainly classified into two categories: implementable and non-implementable. The header of a Note clearly states whether the Note can be implemented or not.

Conclusion

SAP notes are intended to fix problems, but they remain code changes. Therefore, functionalities must be thoroughly tested after applying the suggestions, no matter whatever the change may be.

If notes are not available for errors or problems in standard programs, customers and partners are invited to submit messages with complete information and the priority of the problem.

Based on the priority, SAP will work with the customer and offer a solution in serious cases.
